The park was fairly empty on a weekday evening. The summer heat was a little stuffy but the overcast sky offered some relief from the 90+  F temperature. Not too bad.

My knee has been bugging me for the last couple of weeks. I’ve pondered on different reasons for the pain and tightness, maybe recurring IT band problems,  new shoes, road running and/or all of the above. Of course the problem would flare up right before a race. Shortly after returning from an amazing trip to Juneau, Alaska, my friend Margo asked if I had an interest in a marathon in Italy in October called the International Lake Garda Marathon. I have never been out of the United States and just returned from the trip to Alaska. I could not imagine visiting another country !!

This journey started at the Gator Trail as several ultra running friends discussed how much they liked the run. The race starts early so camping is advised. Camping? No problem- sleep in your car! Lake Waccamaw State Park is the location for the Gator Trail 50K directed by Grant and Donna Egley.  The trail is mainly flat,  with sand, pine straw and many roots to kick around. 6 loops covers the entire 50K ending with the final half mile on a long boardwalk and through the parking area.
